VISITOR POLICY

Annual Theme at Tirvelt Herberstein

The Diversity of Life

A journey through the worlds of animals, nature, history, and art. Embark on an open-air safari across all continents and encounter local wildlife and exotic animal species set against picturesque backdrops.

The proud peacock will show you the exotic diversity of Asia, while the red panda will open up the uncharted world of Nepal to you. Europe, with its fallow deer and lynx, also holds many surprises. Then you’ll journey to the polar wolf in the Far North, to a herd of bison in North America, to the Oedipus tamarins in South America, and to the alpacas in the highlands of the Andes. Thanks to your encounter with the emu and the kangaroo, distant Australia will feel much closer; Africa will be represented by the king of beasts—a lion named Caesar and his family—and you’ll literally race across the savanna with zebras. A feeding demonstration with commentary, watching our animals’ young, or an adventurous tour of the castle will give you unforgettable experiences. Another plus: there are no restrictions for your four-legged friends.

More than 700 animals have found a home at the East Styrian Zoo Center. With 90 animal species representing 5 continents spread across an area of 46 hectares, the Herberstein Zoo is one of the largest wildlife parks in Central Europe. We participate in more than 20 Austrian (e.g., the Austro-Hungarian albino donkey, the long-tailed owl) and international species conservation programs (e.g., the two-toed sloth, the macaw, the spectacled bear, etc.) aimed at preserving biodiversity.

STEIERMARK SCHAU Exhibition

The STEIERMARK SCHAU 2023 exhibition, titled “The Diversity of Life,” at the Herberstein Zoo is dedicated to the conservation of species and habitats, as well as measures to combat climate change—one of the most pressing issues of our time. The traveling pavilion is designed to draw attention to these important issues on the global agenda, extending beyond the borders of any single country.

The new “House of Biodiversity” (located in the former Gironcoli Museum) invites visitors to discover the wonders of natural diversity at numerous hands-on stations and learn more about the important role that intact natural cycles play. The adjacent “Faistritz Gorge” nature reserve, a site of European significance, offers the opportunity to combine a visit to the exhibition with an outdoor nature experience. Five outdoor stations, whose architecture is skillfully integrated into the landscape, form the “Diversity Trail,” which draws attention to the theme of habitat diversity and ecological networks. The observation deck offers a breathtaking view of the natural landscape, rich in diverse animal and plant species. Feistritz Gorge.

Mobile Pavilion

The STEIERMARK SCHAU mobile pavilion “builds a bridge” between phenomena on a regional and global scale, drawing attention to what always and unconditionally surrounds us—the atmosphere.

Thanks to its artistic presentation and stations dedicated to climate and space research, the exhibition in the pavilion offers a fresh perspective on these issues.

Starting in April 2023, a NEW FEATURE awaits you

"Herbie's Play World" (next to the "House of Biodiversity")

Children ages 2 to 12 will find fun activities and games to enjoy in any weather at the 1,100-square-meter indoor playground “Herbie’s Play World.” A strength tower, a ninja zone, trampolines, and a donut-shaped slide—there’s plenty of excitement waiting for them here.

Don't deny yourself the pleasure of visiting the nature and recreation park in Herberstein as often as you'd like—after all, an annual pass entitles you to participate in any tours during operating hours without any restrictions.
