Summer Theme in Herberstein's Animal World
The Diversity of Life
Treat yourself to a journey through the worlds of animals, nature, history, and art. Embark on an open-air safari across all continents and discover native and exotic animals in picturesque landscapes.
The Proud Peacock takes you on a journey through the exotic diversity of Asia, where you’ll explore Nepal with the red panda. Europe also holds many surprises, from fallow deer to lynx. Then head to the far north to see the Arctic wolf, herds of bison in North America, white-headed monkeys in South America, and alpacas in the highlands of the Andes. With emus and kangaroos, you can get an up-close look at faraway Australia before meeting the “king of the animals” in Africa—Caesar the lion and his family—and galloping across the savanna with zebras. Commented feeding sessions, observing our young animals, or an adventurous tour of the castle promise an exciting day. An added bonus: it’s a dog-friendly destination.
This tourist destination in Eastern Styria, Austria, is home to more than 700 animals. With 90 animal species from five continents and a total area of 46 hectares, Herberstein Wildlife Park is one of the largest wildlife parks in Central Europe. We participate in more than 20 Austrian (e.g., the white Baroque donkey, the Ural owl) and international species conservation programs (e.g., the two-toed sloth, the macaw, the spectacled bear, etc.) to preserve biodiversity.
STYRIA EXHIBITION – EXHIBITION OF THE AUSTRIAN FEDERAL STATE OF STYRIA
Under the title “Diversity of Life,” the STEIERMARK SCHAU 2023 exhibition at Herberstein Wildlife Park will focus on the conservation of animal diversity and habitats, as well as on the greatest challenge of our time—measures to combat climate change. The mobile pavilion also sparks interest in these important topics beyond Austria’s borders.
The new "House of Biodiversity" (in the former Gironcoli Museum), with its many interactive exhibits, invites visitors to discover the wonders of natural diversity and raises awareness of the vital services provided by intact natural cycles. The neighboring European protected area of the Bistrica River Gorge (Feistritzklamm) offers the opportunity to combine a visit to the exhibition with experiences in nature. Five outdoor stations, architecturally integrated into the landscape, serve as a “path of diversity” that highlights the variety of habitats and natural networks. The observation deck offers a magnificent view of the species-rich natural landscape: the Bistrica River Gorge (Feistritzklamm).
Mobile Pavilion
The STEIERMARK SCHAU mobile pavilion spans from the regional to the global level and raises awareness of something we take for granted: the atmosphere.
The exhibition in the pavilion, featuring artistic works and exhibits on climate and space research, opens up unimaginable perspectives.
