A whopping 14 baby goats—8 males and 6 females—have been born at the petting zoo. “Every year around this time, the petting zoo is like a kindergarten. In the walk-through area, visitors can give the baby goats some cuddles,” said Doris Wolkner-Steinberger, director of Tierwelt.
An eland was born on March 27. The eland is the largest species of antelope in Africa, and the horns of the males can grow to over one meter in length. There have also been new additions to the herd of fallow deer, which are native to the Indian subcontinent. To date, 10 young have been born.
But it’s not just the birth rate that’s driving the population growth. Just in time for the season opener, the 86th animal species arrived in Herberstein—which also happens to be the fifth species native to the Australian continent. Two crested pigeons have moved from a Swiss zoo to Eastern Styria and have now taken up residence in a new aviary alongside our female kookaburra, Heidi. Other animal residents in this Australian community include emus, kangaroos, and black swans.
