Herberstein Garden Palace

featuring a rose garden, the Feistritz Gorge, and an indoor playground

Take a trip back in time

A family history spanning over 700 years awaits you at Herberstein Garden Castle. From the old stone house to the castle and on to the Baroque Florentine Courtyard, you can trace the castle’s evolution during a guided tour and experience the interiors up close. The Herberstein family has owned the castle for 22 generations now; its construction spanned over 450 years.

The first castle was mentioned in writing as early as 1217. Herwig von Krottendorf referred to his residence as ā€œHerwigstein.ā€ This is also where the name ā€œHerbersteinā€ originated. Starting with this old ā€œpalas,ā€ which was built at the top of a 40-meter-high cliff, the castle expanded eastward over the following centuries. In the 16th century, during its largest construction phase, the structure transformed from a fortress into a castle. The Florentinerhof, built in the 17th century under the then-owner Johann Maximilian I, was the castle’s final addition.

Blooming and Flowers

The origins of the gardens in Herberstein date back to the 16th century. The existing rose garden was reconstructed in 1997. It was modeled after a Baroque-era garden, which also featured a pavilion in the center and geometric flowerbed patterns surrounding it. Architect DI Maria Aubƶck designed the garden around four colors that symbolize human characteristics. In addition, there are sections named after the times of day and oriented according to the sun’s path (morning, noon, afternoon, and evening gardens).
