Sunday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • at the Herberstein Wildlife Park and in the Feistritz Gorge

Launched by the UN in 1993, the International Day for Biological Diversity draws attention to the richness of plant, fungus, and animal species. Help document biodiversity during your visit to Tierwelt Herberstein. How? Observe and photograph the wide variety of animals, plants, and fungi outside the enclosures, then upload your photos to the free iNaturalist app. Experts will be manning observation stations along the Biodiversity Trail on the zoo grounds and at the research van in the Feistritzklamm gorge, and will be available to answer any questions.

At four stations, visitors can make observations about local biodiversity and learn interesting facts from experts.
There are three stations located on the grounds of Tierwelt Herberstein, along the Path of Diversity:

  • Station 1: Biodiversity Arena: Using stereo microscopes, students examine soil organisms and mosses
  • Station 2: Feistritzklamm Panorama: At the observation tower, visitors can use binoculars and a spotting scope to observe the birds in the gorge
  • Station 3: Adjacent to the Historic Garden at the entrance to the Feistritz Gorge, insects and arachnids are collected and identified.
  • Station 4 is located in the Feistritz Gorge near the research van: There, aquatic animals are identified in the morning and mushrooms in the afternoon.
