Three colorful birds have returned to their mother’s birthplace: the parrot sisters grew up in France and, since moving in, have formed a social group with their Herbersteiner macaw aunt. Together, they live under the same roof as the tapirs.
In 2023, macaws will take center stage in the zoo world: they have been named “Zoo Animal of the Year.” In this role, they draw attention to the many animal species threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and poaching. One partner in the campaign, which was launched in 2016, is the Association of Zoological Gardens (VdZ), of which Tierwelt Herberstein is a member. These efforts help raise awareness of species conservation projects and educate the public. Trade in these animals is strictly regulated by the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)” and is permitted only in exceptional cases (for example, for breeding purposes in zoos).
With the arrival of the diamond doves, a new species has taken up residence in the East Styrian bird aviary. Diamond doves are the sun-worshippers of the pigeon world. Even during the hot midday hours, these birds do not seek out shaded spots, but instead prefer to lie in the blazing sun.
But it’s not just visitors interested in birds who will be delighted. With the start of the season, a new feeding schedule goes into effect—for the first time, four pumas will showcase their elegant leaps in front of an audience.
Hours: Open daily from March 16, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; visitors may remain in the park until 5 p.m.
