Six more green monkeys from the Magdeburg Zoo in Germany have joined the existing group of seven green monkeys. Together with the mandrills, a species of baboon, they live in a spacious enclosure.
“The new arrivals are between one and four years old and are helping to rejuvenate the group. After all, the average age of the existing animals is already a whopping 15 years,” said Dr. Reinhard Pichler, the zoo’s director.
The name "meerkat" likely arose from a sound shift and is derived from the Old Indian word "markata," which means "monkey." In addition, the fur of green meerkats has an olive-green sheen.
There is news of another new arrival on the African continent: Two weeks ago, a baby wildebeest was born unexpectedly. It was only in May that the male wildebeest was introduced to two female companions. Sparks continue to fly in the enclosure—we can hope for another baby in 2022.
The new arrivals can be admired daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (visitors may remain in the park until 6:30 p.m.). On Saturday, August 21, 2021, the park will also be open in the evening—starting at 7 p.m., the animal kingdom invites you to a mystical full moon festival.
