This deer would have been extinct long ago had it not been preserved in the first zoo in history, the “Park of Intelligence” in Beijing. As a swamp dweller, it has particularly wide hooves that can spread far apart; together with elongated hind claws, these prevent it from sinking too deeply into the mud.
