Lacerta viridis

Green as an emerald

Green lizards are a large species of lizard with a shimmering greenish base color. The males in particular, when in their “nuptial plumage,” also display an intense sky-blue coloration on their chin and throat. The eastern emerald lizard is limited to a few warm locations in Styria. The sun-exposed southern slopes of the Feistritz Gorge, with their rocky terrain, are a preferred habitat for these lizards.

Unlike other native lizards, green lizards like to climb among the branches of low trees and shrubs in search of prey.
