Notice: Inca Thanksgiving Festival on Sunday, September 2

Learn more about the Inca's sacred animals, rituals, and way of life.

At Tierwelt Herberstein, an unparalleled variety of species enchants visitors of all ages. Over 130 animal species and countless plants are waiting to be discovered. The park also offers a wide range of exciting activities for families, children, and school groups—and this year, it’s all about the Incas!

In this vast natural habitat, pumas bask in the sun, spectacled bears and monkeys go about their daily business, and macaws proclaim their joy of life to the world. And what do these animals have in common? They were considered divine!

An Indigenous People with a Love for Wild Animals
Specifically, the Inca, the indigenous people of the Amazon. Hundreds of years ago, pumas, spectacled bears, and other animals were revered by the Inca in sacred ceremonies. They were part of their daily lives, and they were honored just like the sun god Inti.

Inca Thanksgiving Festival on September 2
To give visitors to Tierwelt Herberstein a glimpse into rituals of the past, the park has come up with something special to mark the end of the “Divine Animals of the Incas” theme year: the Inca Thanksgiving Festival on September 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.!

Workshops and Sounds of the Past
On this special day, Inca-style dishes will be served at the restaurant; at noon, allama parade will wind its waythrough the zoo; Inca music performed by five Latin Americans in traditional costumes will create a great atmosphere; and several stations will invite visitors to get involved: Workshops on drumming, making music, knot writing, building dreamcatchers, and archery offer plenty of variety!
