New Black-and-White Addition

Three monkeys have moved to Herberstein from France and have recently begun keeping Makima, a long-time resident, company.

This rare species is found in the wild only in Madagascar. They belong to the lemur family, and their known subspecies include the belted vari, the northern black-and-white vari, and the southern black-and-white vari. The belted vari gets its name from a white stripe around its torso; the rest of its fur is black. Among the new arrivals are two belted varis and one black-and-white vari.

The lemur enclosure is located right next to the Historic Rose Gardens and consists of two glasshouses with a rainforest atmosphere, spacious open-air islands featuring a watering hole, hammocks, and trees for climbing.

In recent years, the second greenhouse has been home to the squirrel monkeys; a new enclosure has been found for the Bolivian primates near the pelican pond.
