New Year's Baby at Herberstein Wildlife Park

The Sloth family now has four members. Mom Speedy and Dad Gonzalez have unexpectedly become parents. This is already the fifth offspring for the experienced parents. The zoo’s newest resident is currently curled up and hidden on its mother’s belly. It will be a few more months before the 400-gram baby is clearly visible to visitors.

Two-toed sloths are native to northern South America, where they inhabit areas ranging from humid tropical rainforests in the lowlands of the Amazon Basin to cloud forests at elevations of approximately 2,400 meters.

Hanging out, sleeping, and snacking in between—that’s the daily routine of this crepuscular and nocturnal species. They spend about 20 hours a day hanging upside down from a rope or in a sleeping box on the walls. Speaking of hanging out: Obi, the young sloth, is now a teenager and has been given his own “kids’ room.”
