A baby boom among the prairie dogs: We're getting about 80 new residents!

There’s been a baby boom among the prairie dogs as well, and their family planning is going particularly well: About 80 pups were born in March 2016, and just a few days ago they left their burrow for the first time and are now curiously exploring the zoo grounds! During the day, the prairie dogs are usually out and about on the grounds.

Prerie Dog Offspring

The little prairie dogs are already darting nimbly through the wildlife

They spend the night in their comfortable underground burrows, which are connected by tunnels up to 300 meters long. The nesting chambers themselves are located up to 5 meters below the earth’s surface.

These cute little rodents are particularly popular with visitors, as their behavior often displays “human-like” traits. They kiss each other in greeting and place great importance on a cozy home; every now and then, they even get into arguments with their neighbors.

Prairie dogs belong to the ground squirrel family. They have a head-body length of 30 to 35 centimeters and weigh between 800 and 1,400 grams.
