Geland, David's deer, and kangaroo offspring

Another wave of births at Tierwelt Herberstein—the number of animal residents continues to grow steadily. Baby animals were born representing the Australian, African, and Eurasian continents.

The Dschelada Family

This is the sixth gelada baby born within 18 months among this species of monkey, which is native to the Ethiopian highlands. “The composition of the group—which now consists of a harem leader, six females, five young, and the newborn—is genetically perfect,” says the zoological director and veterinarian Dr. Reinhard Pichler, who does not rule out further additions this year.

Life in the Australian shared enclosure, where kangaroos, emus, and black swans share a pen, also seems to be going wonderfully. For the fifth year in a row, two baby kangaroos have been born. A new animal house is currently being built for the animals arriving from faraway Australia; the kangaroo building is scheduled for completion by mid-summer.

There’s also been a new addition on the Eurasian continent—a David’s deer was born. The newest arrivals are on display for zoo visitors. Tierwelt Herberstein is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no visitor restrictions and offers plenty of space across 46 hectares for an outdoor adventure among the animals.
