Geladas are a species of monkey and belong to the baboon family. These animals are native to the Ethiopian highlands.
In Herberstein, 3 males, 6 females, 3 juveniles, and the newborn—whose sex is currently unknown—live together in a group. Although the group lives in a harem-like structure, the females are in charge. This means the females have the final say in choosing a mate—and they’ve certainly shown excellent judgment in this regard.
“Ever since a change occurred in the group in 2016—when two males, a pair of brothers, were integrated into the existing community—the foundation was laid for the now very encouraging breeding success,” reports Dr. Reinhard Pichler, veterinarian and zoological director of Tierwelt Herberstein, adding: “Four births have now taken place within a year, and more offspring cannot be ruled out.”
