Another Dschelada cub at Tierwelt Herberstein!

The babies are "popping" at the Dschelada House at Herberstein Wildlife Park. On September 6, 2019, there was another litter—after four females, a male was born. This was the fifth birth in 15 months.

For Mama Makini, this is her second child, following her daughter Mekele. The newest addition is named Jasper. The young baboon is settling in perfectly, exploring both the outdoor enclosure and the Dschelada House alongside his mother.
Members of this rare primate species, also known as blood-chested baboons, live in harems. “Once they reach sexual maturity, the males leave their group to start their own family. This was also the reason why two male baboons were transferred to a zoo in France in early August,” explains veterinary specialist Dr. Reinhard Pichler, Zoological Director of Tierwelt Herberstein.

Currently, one male—the harem leader—six females, four juveniles, and the newborn reside in Herberstein. Their native habitat is the highlands of Ethiopia.
