Armadillos were active at night and have been multiplying!

At first glance, spherical armadillos look strange, almost otherworldly. That’s because of their scaly shell, into which they can curl up when in danger. They then look “completely harmless,” just like a honeydew melon. In Herberstein, a young one has been rolling around the enclosure for the past few days.

The armadillos at Tierwelt Herberstein have welcomed new arrivals.

These little ones in Herberstein are truly a sight to behold!

The ball armadillo parents, Aurora and Sir Galahan, are experienced parents; Mom lovingly cares for her thirdborn. Although they’re nocturnal, the pair also take short walks during the day and are easily spotted by visitors.
Armadillos are native to South America, where they inhabit grasslands, scrublands, and dry forest areas. They feed primarily on insects and their larvae and have the ability to curl up completely into their shells when in danger or in cold weather. When they do this, they resemble a honeydew melon. In captivity, they can live up to 20 years.
