No Hibernation at the Herberstein Wildlife Park

Animals don't need a calendar; they go by daylight: As soon as the days get shorter, they start preparing for the cold season. The zoo animals are ready for winter, for the cold season.

Red pandas love the cold season. The animals at the Herberstein Zoo can be seen in winter from Thursday through Sunday.

Most of the animals have already put on their winter weight or grown a thick winter coat. And they love to show off their winter attire to all the visitors who come to Herberstein bundled up themselves—visits to the animal park are possible from Thursday through Sunday during the winter months.
Winter doesn’t bother most animals at all: take the lions Brutus and Simba, for example! Their fur has barely thickened, but they won’t feel the cold even during the winter months. The sun-drenched lion house is kept at a comfortable temperature and offers fantastic views of their spacious enclosure—and of their neighbors, the nimble cheetahs! By the way, the lions make sure to get plenty of rest, since they sleep at least 18 hours a day!

The cute prairie dogs have already put on enough winter fat; they’ll sleep through the winter in their underground burrows.

Our red pandas are especially happy about the cooler season, since they don’t like heat at all. Now you can find them in their favorite tree, where they sleep most of the time—even in the rain.
