The Birth of the (Easter) Bunny

The Herberstein Wildlife Park is usually known for the births of exotic animals. However, among its 85 animal species, there are not only animals from distant lands but also native domestic breeds.

Just in time for Holy Week, the petting zoo welcomed some new “Easter bunnies.” Two rabbits were born. The newest arrivals were named Bugs & Bunny. It goes without saying—with a wink—that carrots are their favorite food.

The ancestor of the domestic rabbit is the European wild rabbit. This species has been kept as a pet for over 2,000 years. Today, there is a wide variety of colors and coat lengths, ranging from the small dwarf rabbit, which weighs up to 1 kg, to the “German Giant,” which weighs 12 kg.

Speaking of hares: In addition to rabbits, there are also two male pampas hares living in Herberstein. These animals are also called maras and are native to South America.
