Eleven emus and eight kangaroos call this tourist destination in eastern Styria home; they will find shelter in the new building. The animals at Herberstein are the ones located farthest from their country of origin—15,966 km separate Austria from Australia.
Work on the new enclosure took a total of half a year, from April to September 2020. A major advantage is the covered porch, which allows the hopping marsupials to stay outdoors and remain protected in all kinds of weather. This also makes the animal care team’s job easier.
“We have succeeded in securing the funding needed to reach another milestone in the renovation and renewal of our enclosures in accordance with federal wildlife protection measures. I am all the more pleased that, despite the delays caused by the pandemic, we were able to complete the construction project on schedule this fall,” said Tierwelt Managing Director Doris Wolkner-Steinberger.
