Unexpected Birth—A Surprise in the Wolverine Enclosure

Another unexpected birth has taken place at the Herberstein Wildlife Park. Following the birth of lion triplets in November and maned wolf pups in December—also a litter of three—a wolverine cub has now been born for the first time. This is also the first animal birth of 2020.

The young pair, Malcolm and Sunna, have called Tierwelt Herberstein home since August 2016. Both animals came from different Swedish zoos and were introduced to each other in Eastern Styria.

Wolverine cubs are born with white fur, which turns brown over time. The mother and her cub spend the first few weeks in the den.

The initial examination of the newest addition to the Herberstein family was already conducted by the zoological director and veterinarian, Dr. Reinhard Pichler: “The animal was microchipped, dewormed, and vaccinated. Its sex was also determined.” It is a male cub. The animal care team in charge has chosen the name Odin.

Wolverines inhabit areas in North America, Scandinavia, and northern Russia. In Austria, this species can be seen not only in Herberstein but also at the Salzburg Zoo.
