Elementary schools and the Nature and Mountain Rescue Service are actively involved in nature conservation

The students at St. Johann b. Herberstein Elementary School are enthusiastically getting involved in species conservation! And they’re taking a hands-on approach: in their arts and crafts class, the young conservationists decorated 31 wooden nest boxes provided by the Mountain and Nature Conservation Authority. The new birdhouses have now been set up in the parking lot of Tierwelt Herberstein, and the children plan to check back regularly to see if the little houses are occupied!

The students of the St. Johann b. Herberstein Elementary School with Principal Margarete Struggel, Tierwelt Director Doris Wolkner-Steinberger, and Karl Riegerbauer from the St. Johann b. Herberstein Nature and Mountain Rescue Service

That’s species conservation in action! Johann Prem from the St. Johann bei Herberstein Mountain and Nature Conservation Group built nest boxes and brought them to the elementary school. There, the 31 students decorated them and labeled them with their names. Finally, each child set up their nest box in the orchard meadow by the Tierwelt Herberstein parking lot. The boxes will serve as homes and nesting sites for our native birds, such as titmice. The children will check the nest boxes regularly and observe their inhabitants. Their experiences will be examined in detail during class—that’s what makes learning fun!
