New Arrivals on Two Continents – Exotic Baby Animals in Herberstein

There are two new arrivals at the Herberstein Wildlife Park. A zebra calf was born, and there’s also a new addition in the South America House.

Two weeks old, weighing about 25 kg, black and white striped, and never straying from her mother’s side—this is our newest arrival from the African continent. The little zebra filly goes by the name Zora.

Well hidden, on the other hand, is our two-toed sloth baby Sid, weighing 300–400 g, who was born on July 31, 2019. While Dad Gonzalez spends most of his time in his sleeping box, Mom Speedy takes care of raising the baby. For the first 9 months, the baby lies on its mother’s belly and is carried around. This is already the third time this experienced sloth couple has become parents.

“The zebras and sloths have once again successfully produced offspring this year, which is by no means a given. Young animals can also be seen in other enclosures, such as those of the bison, rheas, geladas, and in the petting zoo,” says Dr. Reinhard Pichler, the zoo’s director and veterinarian, expressing his satisfaction with this year’s breeding successes.

Visitors can catch a glimpse of the zoo’s youngest residents every day. While the animals in most enclosures can be spotted relatively quickly, you’ll need a little patience when visiting the sloth family in the South America House.

Opening hours:
Daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; visitors may remain in the park until 6:30 p.m.
