Did you know that a single old native oak tree can provide a habitat for 1,500 different species of fungi and animals? Did you know that the global economic value of soil formation by microorganisms and earthworms amounts to 1.5 trillion euros per year? Or did you know that Austria is one of the most species-rich countries in Europe and that 600 animal species are found exclusively in our country? You’ll learn about these facts, background information, and connections during a visit to the House of Biodiversity.

Let the diversity of life inspire you. At the House of Biodiversity, the topic of nature’s diversity is explored from various perspectives. We visit biodiversity hotspots, ask ourselves how biodiversity arises, and examine the state of biodiversity in Styria. We’ll examine the unequal relationships between organisms as diverse as fungi and trees, or humans and microorganisms. We’ll recognize our connection to nature and assess the value of its ecosystem services for us humans. And, of course, we’ll ask ourselves what steps we can take to help preserve biodiversity.

Our guides will take you on a tour of the House of Biodiversity, introduce you to the treasures and rarities of Styrian flora and fauna, showcase some of the signature species from the Feistritz Gorge —which borders the Herberstein Wildlife Reserve—and draw your attention to species that may seem unremarkable or tiny at first glance but are no less significant or interesting, often living in hidden places.
