“Of our 85 animal species, 20 are from distant Central and South America. It is precisely this colorful biodiversity, which is native to Eastern Styria, that we’re bringing to the forefront,” explains Tierwelt director Doris Wolkner-Steinberger, adding: “Numerous events with a South American flair underscore our theme. The macaw will be our mascot throughout the year.” It all began with a call for name suggestions on social media. From countless proposals, the name ARAncini emerged as the winner.
Another special feature sets the “South Americans of Eastern Styria” apart: With Liszt’s marmosets, lowland tapirs, maned wolves, vicuñas, Bolivian squirrel monkeys, two-toed sloths, and great military macaws, Tierwelt Herberstein participates in the European Conservation Breeding Program and thereby makes a valuable contribution to species conservation.
This winter, from Thursday through Sunday and on holidays, all visitors have the chance to get up close and personal with our “Latinos.” Or tune in to “Steiermark heute / ‘Bei Tier daheim’” on Wednesday, January 23, at 7:00 p.m. to get to know some of our exotic residents on TV.
