Baby Boom Among the Bisons

The animal population at Tierwelt is growing almost daily this spring: Two bison calves have already been born. It is a well-designed mechanism of nature that bison calves, in particular, are born within just a few days of one another.

Just a few minutes old and already on its feet—the youngest bison calf at Tierwelt Herberstein.

There’s a good reason for this surge in births over a short period of time—just like everything else in nature! Young animals in the wild are always at risk of being eaten. If many young animals are born at the same time within a short period, their chances of survival are greater.

This is also the case with bison, even though the calves are naturally well “equipped”: a newborn bison weighs about 30 kg at birth. A fully grown bison can weigh up to 1,100 kg! “At noon today, the second bison calf was born, and we’re expecting another birth in the next few days,” says Managing Director Doris Wolkner-Steinberger happily. “It’s a special experience for our visitors to see the newborn baby animals up close—or perhaps even witness a birth firsthand!”
