Another breeding success for the White Baroque Donkeys!

There’s another rare addition to the petting zoo at Tierwelt Herberstein—a white Baroque donkey has been born and is delighting visitors with its bright blue eyes and light yellow coat!

The baby animal is named Angelo and is the second offspring for the donkey couple Mandy and Aramis. It was not until January 2018 that a baby donkey was born again after a long dry spell of more than a decade. “This repeated breeding success lays a solid foundation for the Herberstein line,” said Dr. Reinhard Pichler, veterinarian and zoological director. Worldwide, there are only about 250 individuals of this species remaining.

After all, this is an endangered species with its own Herberstein lineage. In 1982, this species was rediscovered in Herberstein.

While these animals were known as albino donkeys during the monarchy, the breed has been referred to as the “White Baroque Donkey” for about 6 years. In addition to Herberstein, this species can also be admired in Austria at the Seewinkel National Park in Burgenland.
