On “Animal Tuesday,” we share the latest news from Herberstein. This week, we’re reporting from the Lion House.
They are over four months old, growing very quickly, and each cub is already approaching the 20-kg mark. We’re talking about Spartacus, Maximus, and Tiberius—Herberstein’s three “royal cubs.”
Now the lion cubs’ diet has been expanded. After it became apparent 48 hours following the birth of Styria’s first lion cubs that Mom Amira did not have enough milk, they were supplemented with formula. Starting at Christmas, the “milk bottle” was replaced with cat food. For the past few days, meat has also been added to their diet. In addition to dry food, each lion cub receives 30 deka of fresh ground meat per meal.
The trio is still staying in the Lion House with their mother, Amira. It is not yet clear when they will begin exploring the outdoor enclosure.
