New arrivals among the tapirs—well-camouflaged with stripes and spots

The newest addition to the East Styrian wildlife family is a striped-and-spotted tapir baby. Tapir mom Lisa and her baby, Gonzo, are doing well. Though only a few days old, he’s already becoming a favorite among visitors as he takes his first, still somewhat wobbly, steps into the outdoor enclosure alongside his mom!

Everything in nature has a purpose: behind those fashionable-looking spots and stripes lies the perfect camouflage for our newborn tapir boy. After about 8 months, the little one will lose his camouflage and, like his parents, will have a uniform dark brown coat.

The birth itself went smoothly and lasted only a few minutes: “For tapir mom Lisa, this is already her second baby. She’s experienced and is taking loving care of the little one!” says veterinarian Reinhard Pichler. Little Gonzo is a chubby bundle of joy and already weighs 16.2 kg!
