The two-toed sloth baby, whose sex is still unknown, was born on April 10, 2017. “After a 12-month gestation period, a sloth weighing approximately 300 g was born. Immediately after birth, it clung to its mother’s belly and is now carried around everywhere,” said Dr. Reinhard Pichler, the zoo’s director and veterinarian, expressing great satisfaction with the rapid breeding success.

The two-toed sloth pair certainly lived up to their nicknames, Speedy and Gonzales—at least when it came to starting a family. As a rule, the species’ name says it all. They spend most of their time in a state of deep sleep—up to 20 hours a day—hanging upside down from a rope or in the sleeping boxes on the walls.

They share a communal home with tapirs and capybaras, also known as water hogs. Macaws, coatis, and pampas hares also call the South America House home. Depending on the mood of sloth mom Speedy, the baby may already be visible to visitors.
