A trio of animals in the Puma Enclosure!

The staff at Tierwelt Herberstein, led by Managing Director Doris Wolkner-Steinberger, is delighted to welcome another addition to its big cat family. In addition to the lioness Amira, a female puma has also made her way to Eastern Styria from the Pilsen Zoo in the Czech Republic.

Missoula the Pump Lady

The existing shared living arrangement, consisting of the 15-year-old puma Seal and the 1-year-old female puma Nilam, is being expanded to include another big cat. The new addition is named Missoula; she is 6 years old and weighs approximately 40 kg.

“When integrating an animal into an existing group, one must always proceed with great care. For this reason, the big cat is currently in a separate area and is still separated from the other two pumas by a fence. We plan to bring the animals together in the coming weeks,” explains FTA Zoological Director Dr. Reinhard Pichler.

Starting at the beginning of the season, visitors will be able to experience the residents of the 3,000 m² enclosure near the Puma Rock—which offers a breathtaking view of the Feistritz Gorge—up close during the guided feeding sessions. Pumas spectacularly snatch their prey from a height of 3 meters; it’s no wonder that elegant leaps are a typical characteristic of this species.

For those who can’t wait to pay a visit to our “cats”—Tierwelt is open daily during the Styrian semester break.
