More than 700 animals representing a total of 85 species from every continent call Eastern Styria home. Tierwelt Managing Director Doris Wolkner-Steinberger presented the sponsorship certificate today to Board Spokesperson Christian Purrer, representing Energie Steiermark. The lynx was chosen as the sponsored animal. “The lynx is native to Austria and, for us, symbolizes regional identity and keen intelligence. Furthermore, its name is derived from the Latin word *LUX*, meaning ‘light.’ As a regional energy provider, this is a very logical choice, and we are therefore very proud to welcome our new mascot, Elsa the lynx, into the Energie Steiermark family,” said Board Spokesperson Christian Purrer.
In the presence of her “godfather,” a new enrichment tool was unveiled in the lynx enclosure. “Enrichment is a kind of toy for zoo animals, and our zoological department is constantly coming up with new ideas for our animals,” explains Doris Wolkner-Steinberger, head of the animal department. As part of today’s press conference, a new “training device” was presented for the two lynxes, Elsa and George. Using a pulley system, the two big cats can “catch” their food themselves—simulating how they would hunt in the wild.
Not only the lynx pair but also Animal World visitors benefit from this collaboration. Following the installation of an electric charging station in 2018, another electric charging station and an e-bike charging point have now been added for the current tourist season. For Tierwelt visitors, use of these facilities is free during the zoo’s opening hours, and an eco-friendly arrival and departure are guaranteed.
