Unfortunately, the mortality rate among these newborns, which weigh only 40 grams, is very high—around 50 percent. Nevertheless, the staff at Tierwelt Herberstein will do everything in their power to provide the twins with everything they need to survive. Incidentally, the monkey dad is also helping out a lot with raising them.
They got their name because their hair resembles that of the Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Liszt; they belong to the marmoset family. Adult marmosets are about 40 cm tall and weigh a maximum of 450 grams.
An Emancipated Monkey Family
The baby monkeys, which are about 10 cm tall and weigh 40 grams, cling tightly to Mom Freeza during their first few days; Dad Chrisu is also already actively caring for the young.
Unlimited Freedom at the Zoo
Much to the delight of visitors, the Liszt’s marmosets enjoy unlimited freedom throughout the zoo grounds when the weather is warm. Visitors to the zoo can see the little monkey family daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Thursday, March 14!
